The Lech Walesa Award that honors people and institutions working for understanding and solidarity between nations, freedom and promoting values that Solidarity movement represented, was granted for the second time on September 29 in Gdansk.
This year Laureates are Shadi Sadr, Ladan Bororumand and Roya Boroumand, who work for human rights and democracy in Iran.
"I hope this prize will encourage you to further battle" said Lech Walesa during the ceremony that took place on his birthday "There is still much left to do in the region where you are from" he added.
Shadi Sadr is a prominent lawyer and journalist who has campaigned against a punishment by stoning in Muslim countries. The Boroumand sisters are campaigning against any act of discrimination and have monitored human rights violations in Iran.
The Lech Walesa Award is granted by the Committee of the Award that comprises of: Lech Walesa, former President of Poland, Vaclav Havel, former President of Czech Republic, Stanislav Shushkievich, first leader and head of state of independent Belarus, Jan Krzysztof Bielecki, former Prime Minister of Poland, Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the French Republic, Wladyslaw Bartoszewski, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland.
The Lech Walesa Award administered by the Lech Walesa Institute Foundation is comprised of a diploma and a medal as well as a financial prize 100.000 Euro.
The exclusive partner of the project is Bank Pekao S.A.
