Letter of President Lech Walesa to President Fouand Mebazaa on the occasion of the elections in Tunisia

Gdańsk, October 27, 2011

HE Fouand Mebazaa

President of the Tunisian Republic per interim

Dear Mr. President,

A few days ago newly born democracy in Tunisia passed a first test of its maturity. The day of October 23 opened the new page in the history of your country. The Tunisian people freely participated in the first democratic elections and with a great engagement decided who will on their behalf decide about the future and the shape of the country.

Without the commitment of many human rights activists, the oppositionists, politicians, the young and common people – without their determination and pursuance, Tunisia would not have achieved freedom.  That is why by hand of this letter I would like to congratulate all the Tunisian people. With this letter I want to say how much I value your common effort and the fact that you could transform this peaceful revolution to the process of building the democratic society. I hope that you will write down the constitution that will bring a new order based on coherent system of values and will guarantee security, welfare and liberty of the people.

At the same time I want to assure you of my continuous support. I would like to thank you that you want to exercise the lesson of the Polish transformation.  I wish you wisdom and further successes on the way to stabilization.

Sincerely,

Lech Wałęsa
