Lech Wałęsa visits US Congress

During his visit to the US, related with the 30th anniversary of the collapse of communism in Europe, Lech Wałęsa attended a debate in the Committee on Foreign Affairs. In his speech, which he began with the historical words “We, the People”, he mentioned global threats to democracy and peace as well as the need of a responsible American leadership for a safe future.

After his speech (watch the video) President spoke with the congressmen and met with the Chairmen of the Committee, Mr. William Keating. He also took part in a reception where he exchanged views with multiple American politicians, including the former US Ambassador to Poland, Mr. Daniel Fried. Mr. Wałęsa was accompanied by the author of Polish successful economic reform of 1989, Prof Leszek Balcerowicz.

The visit to Washington included a meeting in the National Endowment for Democracy, leading American think tank, supporting democratic values worldwide, where President Wałęsa gave a lecture titled “Democracy in Central Europe After Thirty Years”. The video coverage is available here.
